Why Bipartisanship Matters in Military and Veteran Advocacy

When it comes to advocating for the military community—whether it’s veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, or surviving families—there’s one thing we can’t afford to let get in the way: partisanship.

The needs of our military and veteran families transcend political ideology. Access to healthcare, survivor benefits, transition support, and timely services are not red or blue issues—they are human ones. These issues often find support across both sides of the aisle, making bipartisanship not just a preference, but a strategic necessity.

Here’s why keeping it bipartisan matters:

  • It gets things done. Bipartisan bills have a much higher chance of passing. When lawmakers from both sides unite around shared values—like honoring service and sacrifice—we can break through gridlock and make real change.

  • It keeps the focus on people, not politics. Survivors, veterans, and military families deserve solutions, not slogans. When we keep advocacy issue-focused, we maintain credibility with lawmakers and avoid being sidelined by political noise.

  • It builds lasting coalitions. A bipartisan base of support ensures that policy solutions last beyond election cycles and leadership changes.

  • It reflects the military’s own values. Our service members serve under one flag, not one party. Our advocacy should reflect that same unity of purpose.

Of course, there will always be hot-button issues. But when we're fighting for a bill that benefits the military community—and already has bipartisan support—staying above the fray is how we protect the mission. We can’t afford to let today’s political divisions sabotage solutions that should be universal.

The battlefield for advocacy isn’t left vs. right—it’s action vs. inaction. Let’s stay focused, stay united, and stay bipartisan.
