Happy Birthday, Marines
— from an Army Surviving Spouse
Every year on November 10, the Marine Corps celebrates another year of Semper Fi toughness — and those of us from other branches tip our hats (and maybe raise an eyebrow) in admiration. I may be an Army surviving spouse, but I’ve learned to respect that unmistakable Marine energy — loud, proud, and always ready to debate who’s the toughest of the tough.
Let’s be honest, the rest of the branches know that if there’s a birthday party, the Marines are bringing the noise, the history, and the cake. Founded in 1775 — before there even was a United States — the Corps has built a reputation on discipline, loyalty, and a level of swagger that no amount of PT can replicate.
From the beaches of Iwo Jima to the sands of Iraq and Afghanistan, Marines have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardians, and coasties — proving that while each branch has its own flavor, the mission remains the same: protect and defend.
As an Army spouse, I’ll admit — we may roll our eyes when Marines strut in their dress blues or remind us (again) that they’re “first to fight,” but beneath that friendly rivalry lies deep respect. You fight hard, train harder, and carry yourselves with the kind of pride that reminds all of us why the uniform matters.
So, from one warrior family to another:
Happy 250th Birthday, United States Marine Corps.
Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unrelenting standard of excellence.
Now go enjoy that birthday cake — you’ve earned it.
And yes, we’ll let you lead the next charge... as long as the Army handles the logistics.
